There are many possibilities of checker patterns some of the limitless combinations are listed below:
So how are they done? Whenever I would see them on a model I would say its impossible and even make fun of the painter spending years to do them ( I was jealous! ). Finally I found the courage to try them and here I give a little easy tutorial for all of those fellow painters who haven't given it a try! Remarkably it isn't at all hard! And doesn't take a long time maybe like 5 minutes per each application of paint, so if the paint would dry instantly that would be like 20 minutes only per side of the horse!
Im no expert painter but this is a easy way I have found to do them! First undercoat the model with the darker color of your checker theme, makes life really easier!
I have decided to do a Yellow/Black checker theme as my army is themed that way.
Since yellow is such a weak color I start the theme with a bleach bone type color ( I use a mixture of GW and Humbrol colors ) Matt satin 71. Start at one corner painting just one square the size you want the pattern to be. Next paint another one kinda like it over it on either side so the corners touch.. Now keep going up like this until u reach the top of the section you are painting. Should be something like this now :
Don't worry about the mistakes.. I have made already a few! You have plenty of opportunities to correct them later. Continue doing the pattern on the rest of the horse and you should get something like this:
Again don't worry about the mistakes!! You will make many believe me.. If you don't than u don't need to read the tutorial :P Next Step is to apply the first coat of yellow! Just like before paint over the bleach bone color to get a firm strong yellow.
After this its time to apply the second coat of yellow, remember to keep the paint thin so you don't get bubbles on the horse barding. After applying the second coat it should look something like this:
Now if your happy with the light color its time to correct the mistakes that you have made.Get the dark color in my case black and the same small brush and start correcting the mistakes you have made. You have to be extra carefull now cause if you make another mistake its harder to erase as you have to paint it again first bleach bone and than 2 coats of yellow so caution is advised! Once you have done this you should be almost finished: Finally paint the Rest of the horse, armor etc
