Literature - The Chronicles of King Mislav
Written by King Mislav
Thursday, 14 April 2011

Few weeks ago i was asked to write a story for our local warhammer league. The story plays no significant role in the league itself, but i thought it would be good to translate it and publish it here.

It has a Bram Stokery ring to it, mostly due to the diary form and the vampire thematics. I think all else is explained in the story itself.

Personal journal of Ban Mislav the First of the Bretonnian HInterlands
13th of April, Imperial Year 2535.
Crac D'Aigle, Bretonnian Hinterlands, Dukedom of Gisoreux, Bretonnia

Inset 1: The letter

Most regarded Ban, Your Highness
I write to you, while, I do not know to whom should a soul turn when everyone had abandoned it. I do hope I'm not wasting your precious time  come here and you will die  with this letter. But as time passes, I am ever more certain I will rip your heart out and feed small pieces of it to your descendents over the course of centuries that the task i have taken upon myself to fulfill might prove too difficult for me. I see you. At the moment I am traveling towards Nuln, with the box with me. All is explained in the diary which i have sent you along with this letter. I will dive into your bowel like a mythical giant and devour its soft tissue and life juices. I hope my letter reaches you in time. I have sent my best pigeon carrier. As you read this, I am digging your grave.
Greetings and thank You for your help

The Music of Bretonnia

Greetings Round Table Members,

As a music teacher and performer, I am always curious and speculative in regards to the music of fantastical nations and races.  In November, 2010, I posted a contemplative discussion thread in the Great Hall about music in Bretonnia and invited the members of the Round Table to contribute their ideas.  Below is a reworking of my original post that includes:

I: An expanded summary of Medieval (and some Renaissance) music

II: Lists of instruments heard in period-accurate performances

III: My expanded musings on the state of Bretonnian secular and sacred music

IV: A large, updated list of musical clips to inspirational Bretonnian-esque pieces (some of which are period, some of which are significantly more modern)

V: Credited user contributions from the Great Hall topic thread.

Please enjoy!

A

t this most hallowed day we hide indoors from the long night. We shelter from the sinister shadows that rule the darkness. Slow hours pass as the demons of our world dance freely on the plains. Unchecked they rule their greatest friend, the night. The pitch black makes them grow bold as they venture from their hiding. No wise men witness their passing and none know their deeds. One might even believe they are not here safe for their devilish prints on virgin snow the next morrow: gone as twilight breaks the curse. The night belongs to the tainted ones, young ones, and their frigid worlds. The cold seems to seep through every crack this night, both here as inyour heart. But let piety warm you. Believe in Her and Her divine servants. Know that they -as the trees- slumber but can be woken by faith.

Retribution

    ~ snap ~

A tiny orb of light poked through the dark ooze of evening. It made him nervous – very nervous.

“Maggot-breath!” he hissed, “Your carelessness will see both our heads skewered by Bretonni lances before we’ve even begun!”  Another snap of fingers and the light was extinguished.

The brief glow had illuminated the head of his smaller companion, its grotesque face a near equal to its fetid stink. Again, as it had so many times before, the real risk of betrayal loomed heavy in his thoughts.
