Chapter One: A Fools Errant

M

y story starts in the year 1493 after the Twelfth Battle of Giles le Breton. I was born one cold and clear winter night, two weeks before I was expected. My parents, Baron Sandorin and Lady Evelinne, always told me how silent a youth I was. One of their favourite stories is that I once fell from my cradle and didn’t scare the entire household with crying as babies normally do. A different matter was when I cried for hours when I lost my little Fay Doll. My family was so shocked by my desperate cries that they made certain, it would never leave my side again by tying it to my right hand. Come to speak of it, I think the doll still lies in my old chamber.

Literature - The Twilight War Campaign 2006

Twenty-one days have passed since my arrival in this rugged land, twenty-one days of incessant fighting and bloodshed, panic and toil, twenty-one days of defending, assaulting and counter-attacks in a land where chaos reigns. A lot of men, elves and dwarves have fallen to the enemy yet we are now into deep to pull back. I have to admit that these lands grow on me: where I first despised and cursed these rugged lands, now there is a growing respect and interest in its primitive nature. One can walk through the windswept plains and waving grasslands and forget that no miles further a battle for live and death is fought. The last empty lands of the Olde World: here lies a mystique and old tranquillity; I’ve rarely felt beyond fair Bretonnia.

* When reading the following article be assured that I do not proclaim myself to be an expert in anything. Rather, I wish only to answer a few questions that have bugged me for a few years - questions that I could not find any definitive answer for. I decided that if I could not find the answers from someone else, then I would try to find them myself. If I have had to speculate on anything, I have done so hesitantly, but as academically informed as possible, and I have noted any and all speculations. Please read it over and comment on whatever you like, and know that I have done this only for the sake of breathing even more life into the beautiful land of Bretonnia.

A tale from the Twilight War.

                                                         CHAOS RISING

                                                              PROLOGUE

Alain De Montgallion was tired. Bone tired. He couldn’t remember when last he had slept. Was it two nights ago, three, was it more? He couldn’t quite remember. His memory seemed fuzzy, events were blurring into one another in his mind. He suddenly shook his head and took a deep breath. His concentration was wandering again. He had to pull himself together and stay focused. He stared down again at the map in front of him. All around him in the battle tent was hectic activity. Knights coming and going, squires and retainers rushing about carrying messages and reports, questions being asked, arguments about deployments and orders being barked.
