The Forces of Robert de Lyonesse 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Hello all!
So I figured I ought to start posting some of my stuff, after getting so much inspiration here from the various army journals.
Though I make absolutely no promises as to speed. I am not what -anyone- would consider a fast painter.
Fluff first, I suppose. Pictures will have to wait until it's not so grey outside. and I can actually get some decent pics.
*grumble*
So these are the forces of Robert of Caerdol, of Lyonesse, usually lead by his daughter, Rhiannon. They are responsible for watching part of the border between Lyonesse and Mousillion; to ensure that nothing crosses that border that shouldn't. Their family descends from one of the knights of Mousillion who defected to Lyonesse and fought against Merovech, so there's a particular determination to prove themselves.
I fully admit that some of my knights are not the best I could do, but they're also 3 or 4 years old. Now that I'm getting back into the hobby, I hope to get my painting skills back into practice.
However, I also happen to know my limitations. As someone with no depth perception, I have serious trouble with highlights and freehand, as I'm not entirely sure -where- the brush is on the model. So -don't- look to this army journal for the incredible painting!
Oh, yes, and the occasional 40k model might sneak in here, since I will be working on them as well.
First pictures coming soon, I hope!

Re:The Forces of Robert de Lyonesse 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Ok, so here's the first few things! Please bear in mind that I don't have a lot -completed- for my Brets yet, and this will be a slow process.
First, we have a peasant bowman. I painted him up a few years ago, and I'm pretty happy with him.
I'm going to stick to the dark blue as a unifier for the bowmen. It might not be practical/traditional, but I like the look. I might try to take it a bit darker on my next models.
Next, we have a mounted damsel on horseback. I'm not too fond of this paint scheme, or of the model, but it was one of my early works, so I'll keep it for now, so that I can field a mounted damsel/prophetess. I don't know why this one came out blurry. . .
The model I eventually want to use instead is here. I've seen a few other people using her, and I really like her, so thank you for the inspiration!
Here's a Knight-Errant WIP. He's almost done except for basing and neatening up my mistakes. The core of the army (KoTR, KE, and M@A, plus the Lord and Paladins) will all share the same or very similar heraldry, and all the KE are sharing the same heraldry.
Part of that is simply because I started painting my Brets before I knew anything about heraldry or how I was going to work with it. I don't mind, though. I actually like the monochrome look, though I'm still perfecting how to get the whites and yellows even.
Next, is a Pegasus (minus Knight for now). Again, he's mostly done, just needs some neatening up and his heraldry done. He's in different colours, since this army wouldn't have a standing force of Pegasus Knights, so they're going to be allies brought in from other places.
As you can see from the yellow, I experimented with the GW washes, and discovered they're not so good for big surfaces. Lesson learned, I suppose. *sigh*
And last for this post is a just started Trebuchet. I am using the GW Treb out of convenience, as I won it at Games Day Toronto. . . I think 2006 or 2007, well before GW Canada amalgamated with GW US. (Which made me sad. The Canadian White Dwarf was actually decent! )
Actually, I technically won a box of Wood Elves. I swapped with someone else who played WE for the Treb, so we could both go home with something we could use. When the concept for my Brets finally came together, I first didn't intend to use a Treb. But I gave it a try a few months ago, and found it both fun and incredibly effective.
Though the assembly process for this was a pain. I actually regret the way I put it together, because it's not quite level. But I'm -not- stripping and re-gluing it. It was enough trouble to put together the first time.
Also, Trebs because far more useful for me, since the changes to 8th ed meant that spatially-challenged me no longer had to try and guess distance! Yeay! (Seriously, I can't judge distances to save my life. I'm not even allowed to drive.)
Oh, and yes, the counterweight's fallen off. I'll have to see if it continues to fall off, I might have to pin it. *grumble* I -hate- pinning metal.
That's it for now. This is going to be slow, November is a -very- busy month for me between two major papers and NaNoWriMo. And in December is a 40k Tournament that I'll have to dust off the Tau for.
But painting my Brets might be a nice escape, I'll have to see how insane I go.
Next up: BSB and converted Lord WIPs

Some of this is great and I think you can really build on it , I mean I'm no great painter in fact I'm definitely mediocre however I would like to try and give you some useful tips that I have picked up
Ok painting white: I actually very impressed with your coverage it is very even and flat however it is a little flat perhaps start with a base of codex grey and leave this in the recesses to give it some depth.
Yellow: needs just a few more thin coats to achieve a uniform coverage but its getting there
Finally just a quick drybrush of graveyard earth would make that treb look top notch
I hope these tips help, please don't think me rude for criticizing your hard work I just want to try and help
Good luck with the rest

Oh, no worries! I'm always looking for suggestions.
Ok painting white: I actually very impressed with your coverage it is very even and flat however it is a little flat perhaps start with a base of codex grey and leave this in the recesses to give it some depth.
Hmm. .. . On the one hand, I agree with you, my white is very matte. It's because I thin it -a lot-; so on the one hand I get even coverage, on the other, it flows everywhere. I'm not sure I could keep a grey in the recesses without it looking off or blotchy.
My undercoat is actually the light foundation grey (don't remember what it's called off the top of my head). Then I just build up with many very watered down layers of white. I have another older knight where I built up from Codex Grey (I think) and he's far more blotchy. (I'll see if I can get a picture of him) That's why I tried this, instead.
Well, something to experiment with, I suppose. I've got lots more to paint, so there's always time to try something else.
Yellow: needs just a few more thin coats to achieve a uniform coverage but its getting there
Ah, well, yes. Yellow, I find, is worse then white for getting an even coat, even with the foundation paint. Still haven't gotten that to quite where I want.
Finally just a quick drybrush of graveyard earth would make that treb look top notch
Ah, that would work quite nicely, wouldn't it! Thank you. I was debating what my final highlight on the wood would be.
I hope these tips help, please don't think me rude for criticizing your hard work I just want to try and help
Oh, no, I'm glad for the comments. I don't think you're rude at all!
Good luck with the rest
Thanks!

Seconded! A rather nice undercoat for a golden yellow is a 50:50 mixture of Iyanden Darksun and Macharius Solar Orange.
Another thing... do something with the bases. They're a bit basic.
Ahh! Your reply crept in as I was posting. My apologies.
I'll have to try your suggestion. Right now my undercoat for the yellows is just Iyanden Darksun. Thanks!
As for the bases, for some reason, in the photos they look black and the sand really stands out. Weird. I've actually got them painted, drybrushed and the sand inked, and they look very different on my shelf. I don't know why that happened.
Although I do want to add a few bits to them, especially the Pegasus base. I'm just not quit sure what yet. Maybe I can find some rocks and such, since it's supposed to be something akin to the badlands.
Thanks!
Edit: And thank you for PMing that black dip idea -- that might be my solution to give the white some shading. I'll have to inflict that on a Knight-Errant and see what happens. . .

Re:The Forces of Robert de Lyonesse 2 Years, 9 Months ago
So here I am again, with a momentary break between assignments (school shifted some due date on me. . . *grumble*)
I suppose I also should mention, I paint very much on a whim. So some stuff might get blacked and then not touched. I'm hoping with the army journal, I can at least keep my focus on assembling/painting my Brets so I can have a usable force.
And for some reason; the camera was far less co-operative today then it has been previously. I don't know why, so I'm sorry for some of the blurry shots. The camera kept trying to auto-focus on the horses!
Anyway:
First up: Sir Elric of Lyonesse: Banner Bearer for the army.
He's just blacked right now, and I left his banner off for ease of painting. When I start in on him, I'll run a thin layer of black on the few spots the spray didn't get.
And here's his banner, with the initial coat of white done. It actually looks -less- blotchy in the photo then it does in real life.
Next up is the beginnings of my Army General; Rhiannon of Lyonesse:
She's converted from the Repanse de Lyonesse model. Her lance arm is off and will probably stay that way until I get everything painted. I'm pretty happy with her armour, though there's still a lot of detailing and such to do. Sorry for the blurriness, I didn't notice it was that bad until I posted it; I'll see if I can get a better picture at a later date.
And finally, the newest addition to the army, a unit of Grail Knights. This is just the musician.
He doesn't have a name yet. I've got the banner bearer built too, but his picture turned out so blurry that I'll do another one later.
I intend to have Questing Knights too, and they fit better with the fluff of the army.
Now, the reason the Grail Knights got started first, is apparently they need models not to be -useless-. I tried them out via proxy; and they were. .. well crazily un-spectacular due to absolutely horrible dice. So maybe if I placate them by building their models, they'll do better next game!

Re:The Forces of Robert de Lyonesse 2 Years, 9 Months ago
So, a bit of news. I'll have a new painting project: I've got a few Eldar to finish, along with touching up and dusting off the Tau. I'm entering a 40k doubles tournament. My partner is playing Eldar, I'm bringing Tau.
However, I've been asked to finish up a few of my own Eldar models for her to borrow. So the Brets will be on a temporary back burner until December. That works out nicely, though, as I've got some models coming to me in a swap; and a few minis from Reaper I want to order.
So, next up: Touch-ups to my Tau, (as asked) and Eldar Warp Spiders.

Re:The Forces of Robert de Lyonesse 2 Years, 9 Months ago
So, some Tau, Eldar, and WIPs/repairs for both.
So I'm still trying to get this taking pictures of miniatures thing right. Ironically, the ones I took inside with no preparation came out better then the ones I took outside with a background set up. Maybe it was because it was -too- sunny? *sigh*
Either way, the consensus is I still need practice.
Also, I'm still playing with the GIMP, for editing the photos . . . there are a few glitches where I had to edit out something else in the shot. (That something else being the nose and whiskers of a curious kitten. . .)
Anyway, on to the miniatures.
First, the current WIPs and repairs. In prep for the Tournament, we have a Kroot Carnivore who's gun has snapped. It's an easy fix, it happens a lot. It's kind of annoying, and I suspect I might have the same problem with the lances on my knights (but the lances will be harder to glue. . . drat.)
And then my current WIP. I only need to paint him and the Exarch (who's blacked, but otherwise untouched) to get the squad done.
Now, for the rest of the pictures.
First, a couple of finished Warp Spiders, so you can see what he will eventually look like.
They're not usually that dark. . . all the stuff I took photos of outside turned out way darker then it is in RL. . . like I said, I need more practice!
And my Eldar Autarch, because she happened to be out on the shelf, waiting to be based.
Now, as for my Tau:
First, the required and ubiquitous squad of Fire Warriors.
There actually is a full 12 man squad, but they wouldn't all fit where I was taking photos. (and the cat was being difficult. She likes to play with my Fire Warriors for some reason, though she doesn't do it often, since they're usually in the case).
Next, 3 Vespid Stingwings.
They actually are supposed to be shiny, since I wanted them to look glossy. They are bugs, after all!
A small batch of Human Auxiliaries;
See if you can name all the bitz! I borrowed and scrounged, and these guys are what I came up with.
There's a somewhat embarrassing story with these guys. At one point I fielded them against my friend, and he picks one up and says. . . 'his hand's backwards!' I hadn't even noticed. Whoops! The one with the backward hand's not in this pic, partially because I want to redo him eventually, and give him a proper hand.
Anyway, next up is two versions of my Shas'O. The first one is her in her power armour.
As you can see, she's old enough she's chipped. (She's at least 4 years old now. . . maybe more, I don't remember when I finished her.) She'll be getting some touchups for the tournament. I don't want to strip her since Simple Green softens/dissolves Greenstuff. I put her on the bigger base so I she matches the base size of the normal Crisis Suits.
And the second version of my Shas'O, which is her out of armour.
This was actually really fun to convert, since the Tau don't have a lot of crazy conversion projects. I was lucky to get the second Shadowsun head just before GW changed their bitz ordering. About a week after I got the head and some other bitz, GW stopped their policy of being able to order bitz from any model. Needless to say, I got in under the wire on that one!
My Ethereal.
Most Tau players say they're a risk, but I really like having the Ethereal on the board. He's the old special character model, but I like him way better then any of the other models, (even if he is only wearing a loincloth and cloak. . . )
He's an old paint job too, and maybe when I get through some of my other projects, he'll get stripped and repainted. Maybe. . .
And now the big guns.
He was a lot of fun to build. I find Tau Crisis Suits one of the funnest things to put together because of their flexibility; and they're also really easy to reposition if you want to cut at joints. He ended up having a really shadowy shot, despite me playing around in GIMP. Sorry.
Anyway, once again, I'm sorry the outside shots turned out so dark -- my first batch of outside shots (for the painting competition) turned out way better. Maybe it's beginners luck?
Next up: Probably back to the Bretonnians.

Thank you.
I'm sorry for the delay in updates. Between NaNoWrimo and school finals, I actually haven't touched a brush in over a week, *pouts*
Edit: I should have painting time tomorrow. I'm actually really excited! Is that sad that the first thought about finishing my papers is, 'I can paint stuff now?'
I'm still finishing up the Warp Spiders for the tournament, but that should't take -too- long.
