Against this particular list, the
RAF wasn't really a strong choice on my part. Yes, the PKs and Pegasus-mounted characters had maneuverability and could pull Saurus off with Predatory Fighter, but I only had two good lances and a sizable
M@A block for breaking his Stubborn units in combat. Had there been more chaff units, sure, but in addition to these three units there was only a Bastiladon, Cold One riding hero, and a small squad of Ripperdactyls. So, yeah, I could pick and choose where to fight, but again, I had issues breaking the larger units.
I ended up being able to pull one unit out of range of the Slaan
BSB and was lucky enough to have him fail the 3d6 Stubborn 8 break test after I engaged the unit, but had I not gotten lucky, things were looking bleak -- due to a big magic phase, he had the Throne of Vines boosted toughness and regeneration spells off on that unit, so I couldn't begin to harm the Oldblood wearing the Crown of Command!
This player was a little too hesitant, which allowed me even more flexibility in choosing where to fight. Had he thrown his three units forward and forced an early confrontation, I think things would have gone a different way. I would have gotten mired in a Stubborn combat early, on his terms.
I like Beasts against Lizards, for a lot of reasons. The Spear is great for the dinosaurs, especially with trebuchets. There's rarely more than 20-25 TG, so it's a good choice against them as well. I like Wyssans and the character boosts to get past their higher toughness if I can't break a unit on the charge, and if I need to throw the M@A in to hold up a unit, they don't do too bad against Saurus with S5, and T4 saves several men a turn. I think Curse of Anraheir is fantastic against any army, but it's really good against this style of list where the Lizard player needs to keep his units together -- cursing one unit often holds the entire line back a turn.
Someone mentioned the list was a little weak on magic, and it would be interesting to see Curse of Anraheir paired with the Comet, but I think I need a combat lord to take on all the Saurus heroes and lords.
Mounted Yeomen comments are all understood. They are a less-than-stellar choice against Lizards. They do ok against Skinks and I like them for redirecting, but they don't have the flexibility of PKs with Predatory Fighter, as they aren't likely to survive a turn against Saurus warriors. Maybe small units of KEs would do a better job and pack a bit more punch. I have a bunch of the old mounted retainer models, though, and love them so much I have a hard time not fielding lots of
MY.
