Oh man, this is very good work. After experimenting with large amounts of yellow (thinking about painting a few Imperial Fists), its hard (for me anyway) for such a color to come out right and you've done a good job of keeping the yellow bright and noticeable but not to the point of looking tacky. In addition, the kit bashing of the Skeleton Horsemen with Men-At-Arms style helmets looks good despite still a Work in Progress.

What is your technique to keeping yellow "clean"? If you don't mind me prying, of course.

Great job!
I'm doing something similar, a bit darker in the colour and the undead are mixed more with the living. Great inspiration for me. What wings are you using on the pegs?

The trick is to never paint the yellow.
I've used a yellow glaze over white.

The wings are from Reaper.

Cheers for the nice comments

You sir, are a genius. White is hard to paint, but in my opinion due to the current range of greys and off-whites Citadel offers ,white is easier than yellows.
If we're not fighting then we are probably drinking.

Don't paint the white either - just spray the models white > glaze

Well! If I ever make a largely yellow based army I'll keep that in mind!

If I ever paint a knight yellow I will remember this. I have read many times that it is best to undercoat bright colors with white. Or prime white if doing bright colors. But white paint under a yellow glaze is a new idea.

Why did you use (metal?) wings from Reaper Minis? Maybe I just need to look closer ?

They're plasticy resin, not metal.
And those most "undead looking" wings around for horse sized creatures

Hey guys I've been painting up my Salamander 30/40k army as of late...

But found time to build this Mousillon-looking Reliquae, and what will hopefully be a Hippogryph conversion.

Looking forward to painting them up in my army colours

I wish someone had told me this and I hadn't had to find it out the hard way But seriously, using a white base coat (spray or airbrush) makes some of the most troublesome colors paint on so easily.

it works for blues and reds too.

Light tans also make a nice base for yellows and oranges as well by the way. I like to pre-shade and pre-highlight and I find that if I am doing anything with lots of flesh tones, oranges, or browns, a mid range neutral brown base with increasingly lighter highlights from high angles produces excellent results!

At the risk of sharing photos from a non-bretonnian source (it's the only example I could find of a tan basecoated "before and after", here's a Bushido pirate I painted a while back using that technique just as an example of what you can do with a thoughtful base color:

I love these theme armies! It's one of the reasons I joined this forum. There is an incredible amount of thought and imagination that's gone into your Mousillon army!

And on a related note LOVE that Damsel of the Lady. That green dress is beautiful!!!

Over the years, I keep thinking about Mousillion. I kind of want to make up a Mordheim campaign for it, which I'm sure has already been done. But making a half a dozen large Bretonnian ruins and then hammering out rules for half a dozen relevant warbands would be fun. Undead bretonnians, skaven in the riverbanks, beastmen coming out of the forest looking for loot, wood elves chasing after lost artifacts. Maybe instead of Reiklanders, Middenheimers and Marienburgers, have three different Bretonnian warbands depending on whether they were led by a knight, a damsel, or a commoner. The trouble as always is finding a group of players.

Great army. One of my ideas for second army is vampire counts made from bretonnians and now I see that this idea is perfect. Great job and keep posting more pictures
