What can I use to Varnish / protect and seal my finished model? 1 Year, 2 Months ago
? So I have painted my model to the point where I like it and do not wish to highlight or change it any further.

And I've read horrid things about using purity seal and frosting. 'Ardcoat seems like a decent varnish, but it seems to make models shine rather too gloriously.

I've read a lot of suggestions and recommendations on the web, but I am just wondering what my fellow Bretonnian players think is the best way to seal and protect my models now that I'm done painting them. Thanks!

I've generally had much success with Vallejo's matte varnish.

Matte varnish tends to be fragile, and I'm rough on my toys, so I use pledge with future shine then mat varnish. The pledge is an acrylic based floor polish and I mix it with water and run it through an airbrush. It gives a nice durable coat. Then I'll use a matte varnish to kill the shine.

I use Liquitex's brand of varnish personally.

You can get them from most art and crafts store or they can be ordered from Amazon.

They make a very wide range of varnishes.

I use a strong gloss varnish at first myself, since they tend to be more resistant and then add a coat of Matte to remove the shine.

You can brush them on or use an airbrush, just make sure to clean it well after.

An 8oz bottle is less than $9. Very affordable and will last you a long time

I feel like gloss spray varnish gives the best protection and durability, and it doesn't have the worry of frosting. Only drawback I've found is that it leaves the mini shiny all over.

What I'll do is spray a couple of coats of the gloss spray varnish on my finished mini, then after that has dried, I'll go back over it with Vallejo Matte Varnish on all the non metal areas, or whatever areas you don't want to shine.

Benefit is that with Vallejo Matte Varnish, you paint it on, so there is no concern of frosting, and you can leave the shiny parts shiny, and they will shine with the gloss spray.

Vallejo Matte Varnish

Yeah, I've just been using this. It's worked out the best, and when you mix it down with water it's even better.
