If I were doing that I would paint the red first, then do the white - maybe with a light grey first coat to get some cover over the red. If you wanted you could use a pencil and very lightly draw a guide mark to paint up to.

Very Lightly draw using a soft pencil a line down the center of the shield. Then a couple lines across the shield. Drawing the curve symmetrically is difficult free handed. Sometime easier to add a line for the curve's midpoint so its is same on both sides of the shield. Then pain over the lines blue.
If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.
