First game in years! 8 Years, 3 Months ago
And it was in a tournament no less!
There were three rounds at the game shop on Sunday, but because of a real world prior engagement (ok, I had a date), I had to bow out before the third round could begin.
In the two games I got to play in, the first was a crushing victory (killed/caused to flee the enemy to a man). The second one didn't go so well, as when time was called, I had only one mini still on the board, who wasn't running (a mounted yeoman no less!).
The first game was against a Dwarf army, and I deployed badly against him. He was castled in one corner of the board, and as I was setting up (I'm very rusty at army deployment), I didn't realize this, and set up for a much more traditional pitched battle.
Between a botched deployment, and some poorly made march moves, only half of my units got into combat. But those that got in! WoooooO! My Grail Knights, charged, broke, ran down a unit of Dwarf Warriors, and subsequently caused other dwarf units to flee off the table!
The key to winning this game was the Dwarf player failing nearly every dice roll he had to make. His army was composed well, and deployed in proper Dwarf strategy. His dice just hated him that round. I felt bad, but we had a good go of the game, and even had a funny moment, when my Trebuchet scattered off of the table and "Your Stone thrower hit me in the stones!" We had to call a time out to stop laughing!
Anyhow, my second round was against the new Lizardman army, and it was quite beardy. Brilliantly fielded I will say. But still beardy. His Skink skirmisher screen functioned perfectly, and if they didn't flee in the face of my charge, they held on just long enough to get killed, only to leave me vulnerable to a charge.
I should mention that of the units that weren't part of his Skink screen, he had just a group of three Salamanders, a single unit of Skink scouts, a Stegadon with an Engine of the Gods, a bug unit of Temple Guard with that new Temple Guard named character, and some Skink Priest who has this nasty penchant for casting spells with irresistible force when he rolls double 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.
On this particular table, my dice hated me. As such, I failed most of my armor saves, ward saves and most horribly of all, my leadership tests. I was also completely and utterly out gunned when it came to magic. With most of his stuff being cast with irresistible force, my paltry 4, or 5 dispell dice were useless.
Oh well, better luck next time I guess.
I would like to fight that army again, just on a different table. Knowing what I know now, I think a second chance would go much better.
I learned a lot in those two battles, and hope to improve my record!
