The Knights who say No! (Selfbuilt Reliquae)

Sir Boudwin De Brienne:  In the Roman Catholic church, in parts of France and Spain they have proccesions with statues of Saints or the Virgin Mary. Usually they use baldaquins too. I'm planning my Grail Relique in more or less the same way. The statue is an expression of devotion and inpiration for all where the Lady and the Grail stands for. (Hence stubborness in defending this symbol and hatred for those who are allied to chaos). There is a strong connection with grail Knights too, but Grail knights are nobles and have actualy seen the lady. Becomming a grail pilgrim is the highest level of devotion to the Lady that a commoner can achieve. Especially if they may carry the statue.

Original idea:

I'm planning to convert M@A (got this idea from the earl) to express this, carrying a baldaquin (using an old model I have as the lady with the grail, or the old grail knight on foot as a statue). As heads for the models I use the bald heads, some heads from the empire militea and heads with hoods from the bowman. Maybe I use the monk from the bowman of bergerac too.
I'm thinking to use the banner of the QK (got that idea from this thread too)letting it carry by one of the monks, to get more of a kind of proccesion idea.

Final idea:

I used the body, shield and the handweapons of the man at arms. Also the heads without the helmets. Futhermore I used the heads of the bowmansprue with the caps. (My bowman are just as well off with helmets). Also used the bald head from the empire militia sprue. From this last sprue I used handweapons too. The banner is from the questing knights, I dont think knights on horses would carry such a big banner (air resistance!!). The relique itself is the cabinet from on of the questing knights. I glued carrying sticks made of toothpicks under it. The carriers of the religue hold on hand up to carry the relique. These hand are from the empire militia sprue (open hand) and from the zombie sprue. With a little cutting and filing they fit fine. The banner carrier got a small chain with a bud on it.

To get a more monk-like look, I cut away all the 'metal'buds of the armour of the m@a. For painting I used browns and whites, together with a wash of flesh wash, also to get a more monk-look.
Used bits: Questing knights; cabinet, banner
sprues:
Bretonnia M@A; shields, handweapons, bodies, bald heads
Bretonnia bowman; heads with caps
Empire militia: bold head, hand weapon, left arm with open hand
Zombie sprue: open hands

Sir Robert:

I was planning on making my reliquary more like a funeral procession with the Grail Knight in a Coffin-like litter in a state of repose. This picture, however, if very inspiring, and some of the ideas put forth here are excellent. I think I'll be making use of them.

Baron Ivan Loben:

I am getting together the pieces for a reliquae based on the concept art. It will be carried on the shoulder, it will have a statue of the Lady over-looking donated and blessed pieces of passed away Grail knights armour. The monks are the boys that the Fay had taken, returned to see to the Grail Kights effects, assuring the Honor and Respect they've earned!(ref AB). There is a WD on making Knights of Moor. They are all hooded. I plan to use that.
The monks are the go between for the believing common folk, knights, and the Fay. They bring the Grail Reliquae (not unlike the Ark of the Covenment) as a direct inspiration, in dire times, and important battles. The monks are unrelinguishing (stuborn) in their task and have a profound hatred for Chaos and its minons, unbelievers, and blasphemers of the Grail Knights, the Enchantress', the Fay, and the Lady of the Lake!

Sir Corver:

My idea is to use the dead knight but replace the head with louen's spare head and use the spare lance from the GK box. I would then paint him a stone colour so they would be carting around a statue of thier king! it would explain why they looks so weighed down.

They are carrying a statue of Louen king of Bretonnia, surely the lady will protect them and they shall stand firm!

It's a bit hard to see but its Leouns spare head, and a spare lance from the grail knights put on the original dead knight. the only slightly dodgy bit is that the left hand is skeletal,

This thread discusses the Content article: The Knights who say No! (Selfbuilt Reliquae)

Very Interesting, I enjoyed the article, and I too dislike the Grail Pilgrims as they are as stated too comical to seem appropriate in a Bretonnian Army. They seem much more in keeping with, say, the Vampire Counts.

I like the ideas put forth in the article, I suppose it was a series of posts?

I was thinking of making some crazy mix of pilgrims and men-at-arms and such because well, I don't know if it'll work, but technically when the pilgrims draft more pilgrims, they may draft men-at-arms and other like men.... maybe I will make a rabble with some having bows and stuff!

I don't really understand how you can worship a group of knights when you're already worshipping a particular lady. Anyway, I'd still use them, mainly as a bunch of assorted crazies for the Crusading army I'm planning. Got the idea from the slightly innacurrate Kingdom of heaven, when you the guy preaching that 'Killing an infidel is not murder, it is the path to heaven'.

Yes, it was born as a collection of posts in the old Earl Cafael's board when the 6th ed model came out.
It just collected the disappointment of veterna players in front of the opportunity of such cool new unit whic is the grail Reliquary.
We enjoy the idea of the unit, but not the model.
A reliquary is something serious and religious. It can be something extremely beatiful and Bretonnian.
But the actual GW model is only a group of peasant making offense to the body of a Grail Knight.

I too took an instant dislike, verging upon hatred, of the "Grail Reliquae"
I bought one, used the mortal remains to convert a Wight Lord and the rest went into the parts box.
I'm currently making a reliquae based upon a Carroccio or war altar like the one below

That's cool although the cross... being catholic religon and such.... should be a Grail.

Unless we Bretonnians use a cross.... do we? Meh, I need some convertable items.... I shall be back with some! Maybe I can get my brother to buy more empire miltia and I can steal the bows or crossbows or w/e they come with.

Hm... battle pilgrims with bows.... good idea?

Not my model, I must say! But what I'm basing it on!
Re:The Knights who say No! (Selfbuilt Reliquae) Apr 09 2006 03:01
I know I was just asking general questions!
Re:The Knights who say No! (Selfbuilt Reliquae) Apr 09 2006 06:53
I suppose I could try to excuse the peasants on the fact that they don't know any better, but I won't. They supposedly follow the grail knight "to bask in his glory" but they also apparently respond to his instructions.

Therefore, it's the responsibility of the Knight, should they choose it, to instruct those unlearned peasants in the appropriate behavior, though that is unlikely to save the grail knight, should he go down in sight of the peasants, from being torn limb from limb by the same over-reaching zealot peasants.

While I choose not to use the Grail Reliquae, as illustrated by the GW model, I have to state that it is, unfortunately, historically accurate. That very same issue was apparently addressed by The (Roman?) Catholic Church at the Council of Trent in response to Ninety-Five Theses of Martin Luther.

Still, there is no reason that we can't have our own Conuncil of Trent (Conseil de _____(¿Greyholt?))
Re:The Knights who say No! (Selfbuilt Reliquae) Apr 09 2006 08:30
I have come up with a solution that I like and may use until I get to make some extensive conversions for my original idea. I may even just expand on what I have come up with. I have a GW wagon that is being pulled by a horse and surrounded with Grail pilgrims from the box set. The wagon has a ornate coffin on it. The lid of the coffin has a armored knight craved into it. This is holding the Grail Knight. The pilgrims, fanatic and all ,as they are, are escorting the wagon to its final and proper resting place and woe to he who tries to hinder the way or desicrate the knight, for they will sell their lifes to stop that from happening. This is where their hatred and stubborness comes from. I also include a model of a kneeling knight as the Grail Knight is going by, paying homage to a fallen hero.
There are too many comments to list them all here. See the forum for the full discussion.
