The Banner of Defence. When I first looked in the army book I thought it was a very good item. But after using it a couple of times I found it quite a bad item. After some deliberation I found out why...
Why? Lets see at what it does:
It raises your blessing of the Lady wardsave from a 5+ to a 4+ wardsave but only against missiles and magic missiles with S5 or higher.
So it doesn't protect you:
In Combat
Against magic spells that aren't magic missiles.
Against S4 armour piercing attacks.(ratlingguns, handguns and RBT salvoes of 6)
If you lost the Blessing.
But even when it protects you it only increases the wardsave by 1 point
So let's look at the things you get protection from:
Magic:
Lore of Fire: No spells that are within the parameters, no protection
Lore of Metal Gives extra protection against Spells 1 and 6
Lore of Shadow No spells that are within the parameters, no protection
Lore of Beast Gives extra protection against the number 5 spell
Lore of Heavens:No spells that are within the parameters, no protection.
Lore of Light No spells that are within the parameters, no protection (Nr 6 is not a magic missile)
Lore of Life No magic missiles.
Lore of Death No spells that are within the parameters, no protection
Lore of Athel Loren: No spells that are within the parameters, no protection (Nr 2 is not a magic missile)
Little Waagh(goblins) No spells that are within the parameters, no protection
Big Waagh(Orcs) Gives extra protection nr 2 Headbutt spell
Skaven Lore Gives extra protection nr 2 Warplightning spell, is the .standard spell of warlock engineers however
Dark Magic(DE) Gives extra protection against nr 2 spell Doombolt
High magic :No spells that are within the parameters, no protection. (Only if you leave Flames of the Phoenix on the unit without dispelling it it might become S5 after 2 turns, but then you have done something wrong)
Slaneesh: Gives extra protection number 1 spell
Nurgle No spells that are within the parameters, no protection.
Tzeench:
Number 1 spell variable strength so can be S5 or S6 1/3 of the time
Number 4 spell variable strength so can be S5 or S6 or S7 ½ of the time
Ogre gut magic No spells that are within the parameters, no protection.
Tomb Kings: No spells that are within the parameters, no protection.
Against Tzeench, lore of Metal and Skaven magic the banner of Defense has some good chance of doing something usefull, Slaneesh has quite a small range.
The rest of the lores that have spell that fall within the parameters also depends on rolling to get the spell.
Conclusion against magic: Only a very limited amount of magic missile spells it protects against.
Some spells have the high Strength but aren't magic missiles so no protection.
A good magic defense might be a better investment..
(Some enchanted items will provide more magic missiles.
