This Regiment of Renown was developed by Tamlynn at the Hammer and Anvil, and won first place in the H&A 2006 Regiment of Renown competition.

For the young men of the Night Watch the task of bravely guarding the walls of their town was an unsurpassed honour. Though commoners, their families knew what would find them glory unusual for their station. Service to their lord. This goal was drilled into them from an early age, but it was a lesson taught more completely to some than others.

From the darkness came only one call. A single shriek form the fields alerted them to the inhuman beasts that swarmed in the night. Filled with horror they did not battle the horde, nor toll the bells that would alert the townspeople, but ran deep into the forest that lay south of their home. Behind them cries filled the air as the town was razed in a great plume of smoke.

Without the bravery of one lone woodsman, Jean Pierre, the people would have also been ashes. Single-handed he made haste to the town and delivered them through safe passage, away from the destruction. When the sun rose over the smouldering ruins the townspeople wanted vengeance against the cowards of the Night Watch. With one voice they formed a great mob, armed with pitch-forks and clubs, yet against them a voice rose up.

“These men will die, indeed! But they will not die here. They will die with courage, or they will be damned, but they will die in battle! I will make them be protectors to the end. I will lead them!”

On that day the Night Stalkers were born. Ever since they have been led, or rather coerced, from battle to battle, Jean Pierre ever hopeful they will one day find courage within themselves.

Equipment: The Night Stalkers are armed with halberds and light armour. Jean Pierre carries a woodsman's axe, which counts as a great weapon and light armour. He also carries The Shepherd's Crook.

Armour Save: 6+

Special Rules

Shell shocked: For a cowardly commoner artillery is an unusual foe. A well-placed shell might rip the solider beside you into smaller pieces than seems right for a man. For the Night Stalkers the effect of a well-placed shell is that much more fearsome than for the disciplined man-at-arms.

The Night Stalkers must take a panic test when any model is removed as a casualty, as a result of artillery fire. This replaces the usual minimum of 25% casualties.

Superstitious Peasants: The Night Stalkers have heard lots of talk about good ways to die well, and they are pretty sure this isn’t one of them. While an arrow or sword might kill a man there’s no telling what magics will do to him first… or after.

The night stalkers must take a panic test when any model is removed as a casualty, as a result of magic. This replaces the usual minimum of 25% casualties.

Cowardly: The Night Stalkers are mercenaries for one reason only. They are too scared to go home.

Any model that usually causes fear counts as causing terror

Magic Items

The Shepherd’s Crook: Jean Pierre is exceptional at rallying his men. Though he has had plenty of practice there is more than skill on his side. With him he carries a Shepherd’s Crook given to him as a token of luck by an elder from their home-town. It sometimes grants him an uncanny ability to ‘round them up’ at the last moment.

If the Night Stalkers flee the battlefield they remain on the board edge until the controlling players next rally phase. If they fail to rally on this turn they flee as normal.
