Trouble on the Edge of Town
Helly vs. Destro (Chretien)

The game was scheduled for 2,000 pts. on a 6 x 6 table - in 1 corner a smallish town with an abbey and stables, defended by a square tower, while opposite diagonally was a small patch of forest here and there, some rocky outcroppings, and a ruined tower. Lots of open space and green grass - grass that was destined to soon be tinted with the rich red of freshly-let blood...

 


Drycha's Maidens (Destro / Chretien):

  • 1 unit of 15 Dryads with Drycha
  • 1 unit of 15 Dryads with a Branchwraithe
  • 1 unit of 16 Dryads
  • 1 unit of 10 Dryads
  • 1 unit of 3 Treekin
  • 1 unit of 3 Treekin
  • 1 Treeman
  • I Mage, Level 2, mounted on steed

Deployment:
(Deployed First)
1 unit of 15 Dryads plus Drycha on left, within a patch of woods
- Remaining units to be "rolled on" in subsequent turns

Turn 1


Chaos moved first - all units across the front advanced in line and spreading slightly outwards on the flanks. The disposition of the Dryads were not certain as they mostly had not been deployed yet. The Conflagration of Doom was cast successfully with Irrestible Force, but all hits were whittled down and / or Ward-saved away. A blast from the Hellcannon was fairly accurate but scattered out of harm's way from Drycha and her maidens in the woods.

Drycha was able to summon 2 more units onto the table - 1 unit of 10 Dryads, placed in the Wood Elf centre; and 1 unit of 15 Dryads with a Branchwraithe, placed in a woods on the far right, near the town. Drycha's unit advanced towards the Hellcannon to within charge range next turn. The rest of the Dryads all remained in the cover of the forest to wait and see what was to be the intent of the Chaos forces. No missiles or magic used. Drycha and her unit dissolved into thin air and reappeared 6 inches to the front and right of the Hellcannon.

Turn 2


The Chaos Lord and unit of 5 Knights on the left advanced up the centre towards the woods containing the unit of 10 Dryads. The unit of 5 Knights on the far left skirted the edge of town between it and the tower towards the unit of 15 Dryads and Branchwraithe. The Wizard advanced on the left towards the cover of town buildings, near the stables. The Khorne-dogs and unit of 10 Knights advanced towards the right table edge in the direction of Drycha's unit to come to the aid of the Hellcannon. The Wizard tried unsuccessfully to cast Conflag of Doom. The Hellcannon fired at the Dryads on the Wood Elf centre and killed 3.

Drycha summoned a unit of 3 Treekin and the Mage this turn - the Treekin were deployed in a woods behind Drycha's unit, which advanced to within about 16 inches to the front of the Khorne-dog / 10 Knights unit, and the Mage in the woods with the 10 Dryads in the Wood Elf centre directly opposite the advancing 5 Knights and Lord. Drycha's unit charged the Hellcannon, killing 2 of the 3 Chaos Dwarfs, and losing none of the Dryads. The Dryads on the right left their woods to meet the on-coming unit of 5 Knights near the tower / town. The Dryads in the centre withdrew to the rear of the forest they had been in, while the Mage advanced tothe side of the 5 Knights and Lord, yet out of their sight for a future charge by them. Magic this turn saw many attempts at Tree-singing dis-spelled, and all other spells not cast successfully. Drycha did manage to move the woods near her towards the Hellcannon. The Mage fired a Pageant of Shrikes and his Starfire arrows at the unit of 5 Knights in the centre and killed 1, while Drycha's unit lost another Dryad but killed a Dwarf crewman.

Turn 3


The Chaos Lord and the unit of Knights advancing before him edged up to the central woods, with the thought of inducing a confrontation whenever and wherever it could be found, if even in the trees. The Knights on their left maintained their course towards the lonely group of Dryads by the stone tower. The Wizard remained where he was, but the unit of Khorne-dogs/10 Knights used their full movement to drive towards their right and their threatened artillery piece.
The Wizard attempted to cast the Conflag of Doom again, but this time he mis-cast it, with the end result seeing him blasted backwards, narrowly missing the stables, and unable to cast magic in subsequent turns unless he first rolled a "6". The Hellcannon fired another deadly salvo of possessed ordnance, this time at the Dryads on the far left of the Khorne line in an attempt to soften the Dryads up in preparation for the eventual charge by the Knights. A total of 3 Dryads were destroyed in this way - they didn't see that one coming. The combat at the Hellcannon between its crew and Drycha's unit ended with 1 dead Dryad and no Dwarfs left alive.


Drycha summoned the Treeman, the second unit of 3 Treekin, and the last unit of 16 Dryads. The Treekin were deployed in the woods from which the other Treekin had just emerged. The Treeman was placed in a patch of trees to the front/left of the K-dogs / Knights, and the Dryads were sent to help the Dryad unit on the right against the black Knights. The Dryads on the Wood Elf right charged the Knights and in the ensuing melee 2 Dryads and 1 Knight died. Having lost the combat, the Dryads fled but the Knights were unable to catch and destroy them. The Mage fired away at the dazed Wizard with the Shrikes and Starfire arrows and managed to reduce him by a wound.

Turn 4


The Khorne-dogs / 10 Knights changed their course slightly to aim the movement at the newly-appeared Treekin unit. The Lord turned and moved towards the rear and right of their line to head possibly towards the Hellcannon / Khorne-dog/10 Knights units or to intercept the Mage. The 4 Knights remaining in the centre also turned, but to their immediate right, and advanced. The Knights on the far left of the line battled the unit of Dryads there and killed 2, but lost 1 of their own. The Dryads, losing combat, fled, but the Knights could not catch them to destroy them. The Wizard remained where he was and could not cast anything. With the Hellcannon's crew now lost, it attacked and 2 Dryads fell, with no harm done to itself at the hands of the forest spirits.

The fleeing Dryads did manage to rally, though. No magic was successfu; the Mage's Shrikes missed the Wizard completely even though he had advanced considerably deep into the Chaos deployment zone. The Mage's Starfire arrows were successful however and took the Wizard's last wound from him. This dissolved the threat of further aggressive Chaos magic. Another wound was caused on the Hellcannon at the cost of 2 Dryads. The Treeman, now less than 5 inches from the K-dogs / 10 Knights unleashed his Stangle-root attacks upon the Khorne-dogs and killed them all. The firstTreekin unit left the woods it had deployed in and advanced to towards the 10 Knights (and Khorne-dogs at the time). Now it was time for the new unit of Dryads on the Wood Elf right to attack and they charged in, killing 1 Knight and not losing any of their own. Drycha's unit attacked the Hellcannon once again, causing no wounds and losing another Dryad to the infernal machine. Curses!

Turn 5


The forces of Chaos were aware that this was indeed the time for action. The 10 Knights left and towards the Treeman. The Lord advanced towards the Mage. The 4 Knights in the centre continued on their hard-riding course towards the the Treeman. The Knights on the far left charged the newly-emerged Dryads, killing only 2 Dryads and losing 2 Knights in the reciprocal Wood Elf attack. The Hellcannon, in close combat with Drycha's unit, killed 3 Dryads and suffered 1 wound.

The Treeman charged from the wood into the front of the unit of 10 Knights, but caused no wounds, and suffered none himself. The Treekin units both charged the exposed flank of this same unit in support of the Treeman, killing off 3 Knights and not suffering any wounds. The remaining Knights fled, were pursued and caught by the Treekin, and thus destroyed. The rallied Dryads on the Wood Elf right now charged into the Knights there and destroyed that unit, which had been essentially surrounded under the shadow of the stone tower. Drycha's unit inflicted 2 more wounds on the Hellcannon (leaving it still very much alive and well with 3 wounds or so), which killed 3 more Dryads. Not wishing to use any magic at this time, the Mage fired his Starfire arrows into the unit of 4 galloping Knights in the centre and killed 1. This proved to be the final straw for the Chaos General...

At this point the Chaos Lord, with only 1 unit of 3 Knights and the embattled Hellcannon to assist him, decided to concede the contest and leave the field of battle to his adversary.

SUMMARY:


Losses of the Forces of Chaos = @ 1400 pts.

Losses of Drycha's Maidens (@11 Dryads) = 120 pts.

Good victory for the Stick Chicks.

No idea what happened and why, but up until the 4th Turn it seemed well in the hands of Chaos.

Khorne-dog anyone?
